Gary Burns is renowned for his cleverly assembled ensemble casts. waydowntown features an ensemble of more than a dozen actors. The story revolves around four office underlings, Tom, Sandra, Randy and Curt, who each wager a month's salary to see who can stay indoors the longest. Casting the four bettors was a priority, but equally important was creating the perfect combination of players to round out the quirky collection of downtown inhabitants, from a kleptomaniac CEO to a peeping tom security guard.

"When you write a script yourself, you always have a fixed idea of who the characters will be, but then you sit through casting sessions and that all changes. Suddenly the people you're looking at are those characters. Casting is everything," says Burns.

fabriziofilippo  as Tom, the young trainee who is just beginning his climb up the corporate ladder and is finding his life and job utterly boring. The bet has made life more interesting, but it too is starting to close in on him. Plus, he's starting to have a crisis of conscience. Is he really the insensitive jerk people say he is?

donmckellar as the office drone Brad, a 20 year veteran of the firm, who sits in the cubicle next to Tom. He spends a lot of time playing a computer game. And what's with the bottle of marbles?

maryadelver as the enthusiastic team player Sandra. Now "practically, but no longer officially, a trainee", she is sent on a mission to prevent her elderly boss from being caught shoplifting during the final lunch hour before his retirement party.

gordoncurrie  as Curt, the playboy go-getter who believes the only impediment to winning the bet is a shortage of sex partners. Deciding to "dip his pen in the company ink," he sets his sites on a vulnerable co-worker.

jenniferclement as the vulnerable but willing co-worker Vicki. Having just broken up with her fiancé of two years, she is the unfortunate target of Curt's attempt to get laid.

tobiasgodson as Randy, an office trainee who spends his lunch hour with his friend, Phil, giving animal names to passersby.

jamesmcburney as the security guard Phil. He finishes Randy's sentences for him and is determined to bring human dignity back to the inhuman surroundings of the shopping mall.

tammyisbell as Kathy, the object of Tom's lunch hour desire. She seems more concerned about "the colours for fall" than her distraught boyfriend.

derekflores as Paul, the confused flower delivery man who is told by Tom that his girlfriend, Kathy, is apparently cheating on him.

xantharadley as June, the know-it-all receptionist who eavesdrops on Curt and Vicki's tryst in a bathroom cubicle.

danwillmott as Julian, the doting receptionist hanger-on who is left to handle the phones and ends up barking in the women's washroom.
